CYSTINET-Africa project at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has organized a 4-day workshop on writing winning research grant proposals held 22nd to 25th 2020 at green park hotel in Bagamoyo, Pwani.
On opening the workshop training, Dr. Ernatus Mkupasi said that, the objective of the workshop was to enhance skills of Early Career researchers (ECRs) in research grant writing, effective research project implementation and research result utilization. Lack of these skills, makes researchers less efficient in attracting research funds which is one of the core mandates of the University. Multidisciplinary Team of 32 Participants, composed of Professors, Senior Researchers and ECRs in all five SUA Colleges attended the workshop.

He explained that, these trainees will serve as future trainers of other members of SUA staff. The aim is to promote Senior Career Researcher (SCR) – ECR mentorship spirit through engagement of successful SCRs after this training across departments.
Prof. Helena Ngowi, the CYSTINE-Africa project director highlighted that, the overall goal of this project is to fill gaps on the way to control/elimination of Taenia solium cysticercosis/taeniosis (TSCT) and neurocysticercosis (NCC) investing into research, capacity building and networking. The training worship serves as the same purpose.
“This is workshop is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with the overall goal of strengthening Research Support departments at SUA in oreder to enhancing research project implementations at SUA”. She explained.
She added that SUA Research support capacity strengthening (RSCS) programme, is intended to strengthen research support departments to achieve the overall goal. The RSCS measures target four important areas, namely, (1) Enhancement of skills of early career researchers (ECRs) in research grant writing, effective research project implementation and research result utilization, (2) Improvement of efficiency and transparency of procurement process for effective research activities, (3) Enhancement of research and publication management through improvement and adaptation of SUA’s Research and Publication Documentation System (RPDS) and (4) Promotion and facilitation of retrieval of research innovations at SUA. The RSCS programme is in line with the SUA research strategy.
