Abubakar Shaaban Hoza holds a PhD in Medical Microbiology, MSc. Molecular Biology, Bachelor degree in Veterinary Medicine and a Diploma in Global Health Course. He is a Senior Lecturer at the Sokoine University of Agriculture. Hoza has more than 20 years of working experience in veterinary microbiology and One Health capacity building for in-service professionals. He is a member of the National Multi Sectoral Biosafety and Biosecurity Committee mandated to protect the health and safety of the community and the environment by identifying risks posed by, or as a result of work within Tanzania involving agents and/or materials that are potential biosafety and biosecurity hazards, and to manage those risks by regulating “dealings” with such agents and/or materials. Hoza was a member of the National Expert Group for the development of the National Laboratory Biosafety& Biosecurity Guidelines 2022. He is a member of the National Antimicrobial Stewardship Technical Working Group. Hoza has also served as a WHO/AFRO facilitator in Emergency Preparedness and Response Flagship Capacity Building, Learning and Training for African Health Volunteers Corps (AVOHC) on Strengthening and Utilising Response Groups for Emergencies (SURGE) in Tanzania mainland, Zanzibar and in Kenya and Malawi. He has worked with FAO Tanzania to train Regional and District levels Rapid Response Teams in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar. He was a member of a National technical expert group for review of the National One Health Strategic Plan 2022-2027, the National Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance NAP-AMR 2023-2028. He also served as a technical lead in development of Zanzibar AMR Surveillance Framework 2022 and the Zanzibar Standard Veterinary Treatment Guidelines (ZSVTG). Hoza was a member of an Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) Technical Expert Working Group in developing Benchmarks for the Master in One Health for the higher education fraternity in the East African region. Dr. Hoza is currently serving as AFROHUN Tanzania, CPD Activity lead. His research work is in the field of mycobacteriology, antimicrobial resistance of bacterial pathogens of veterinary and public health importance. Hoza has published widely in international and national peer reviewed journals.
