Mary Thadey Lyimo graduated from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology and Laboratory Sciences. Her bachelor’s thesis focused on “Isolation and identification of Enteric bacteria from different water catchments in Morogoro Municipal”. After completing his undergraduate studies, she joined the IITA (International Institute of Tropical Agriculture)-VVEG (Virus and Vector Ecology group) research group under Dr. James Legg, as an intern laboratory scientist where he spent three months researching on Cassava viral diseases (Cassava Brown streak and Cassava Mosaic viruses) with respect to improvement of Cassava varieties. In 2015, Ms. Lyimo joined Tanzania Official Seed Certification Institute (TOSCI), Department of Seed Certification-Seed Pathology Laboratory as a Research Assistant II and later Laboratory assistant II, where she was working on seed certification of Root and tubers crops (Cassava and Round potatoes). In 2020, she started her Master’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at Sokoine Univerity of Agriculture where she was privileged to work with Intermediate Fellowship in Public Health and Tropical Medicine (IFPTHM) project under the supervision of Prof. Christopher J. Kasanga where she actively participate in molecular surveillance of Foot-and-mouth disease in cattle. The programme allowed Ms. Lyimo to gain a comprehensive understanding of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology skills, with a particular focus on global health. Her master’s thesis titled “Molecular Characterisation of Foot-And-Mouth Disease (FMD) Virus (FMDV) Recovered From the 2023 FMD Outbreaks in Southern Parts Of Tanzania” She is looking forward to graduate in November, 2024. In 2021, she transferred to Sokoine University of Agriculture–Department of Microbiology, Parasitology and Biotechnology as Tutorial Assistant.
