SP Guidelines

Proposed Guidelines for Special Project supervision and presentation for undergraduate degree students at the CVMBS

  1. Type of research
    • Students will be required to conduct a short study addressing one to two research questions
    • The research can involve laboratory or questionnaire based data collection, or combining the two
    • Each student should conduct his/her own study
  1. Supervision
    • Each student will be allocated to one of the college departments which will host him/her in carrying the SP
    • Allocation of students to departments should be done by the college undergraduate studies committee (CUGSC) and the arrangement will be shared to students within one weeks after the start of semester 5 and 8 for BLS and BVM classes respectively
    • Students with specific arrangements with instructors to supervise them within or outside the college should present their special requests within two days after receiving allocation arrangements. Such students should indicate the specific arrangements which must be confirmed by the instructors they want to be supervised with.
    • The CUGSC after considering any special requests presented, will reshuffle the arrangements accordingly and produce the final arrangement which should be shared to students and head of departments within two weeks after the start of the semester
    • Students will be required to submit preliminary research titles to the respective departments, and based on that, HoDs will allocate students to specific instructor(s) within the department. HoDs will also consider requests by students for specific supervisors in their departments
    • Each student should be supervised by one or up to three instructors at the CVMBS or other academic units within the University, but the main supervisor must belong to the CVMBS
    • If the student is supervised by an instructor outside the CVMBS, the study must be co-supervised with at least one instructor from the CVMBS, and all the SP presentations should be done within the college in the college where the main supervisor belongs.
  1. Proposal preparation and presentation
    • Students in their 5th and 8th semesters for BLS and BVM respectively should prepare, with guidance from supervisors, proposal for a sound and viable research
    • The students should present their proposals to panellists assigned by the department for evaluation, and the presentation should be done before the end of the semester university examinations. Each student must be evaluated by at least two panellists
    • The departments will determine mode of presentation depending on circumstances
    • Students should submit to the supervisor the final soft copies of proposal and the presentation notes (slides, posters, etc.) for marking and documentation
    • Departments will compile the presentation marks and handle them to the CUGSC. The committee will register the research titles for each student.
  1. Research conduction
    • Students will carry their research during the specified time in semesters 5 and 9 for BLS and BVM respectively
    • In case the proposed study fails to progress for sound reasons, the student will request changing the research title and the request should be approved by the HoD of the host department
  1. Report presentation
    • Students will present their research reports for evaluation to panellists assigned by their host departments before the end of the 6th and 9th semesters for BLS and BVM respectively in a date agreed by the department
    • Each student must be evaluated by at least two panellists
    • The departments will determine the modes of presentation depending on circumstances
    • Students will submit their final report for marking and documentation
    • Departments will determine type of copies to be submitted (soft or hard copies)
    • Departments will assign an external examiner to evaluate the final report
    • The department will compile the presentation marks and submit the report for SP presentation to the CUGSC together with approved changes of research title if any
  1. Undergraduate Examination Regulations
    • These guidelines will be subject to the requirements of the University Examination Regulations
