Mirende graduated from Sokoine University of Agriculture in 2018. His doctoral thesis on the ‘SEROPREVALENCE AND INTEREPIDEMIC RIFT VALLEY FEVER VIRUS SEROCONVERSION IN SELECTED AREAS OF KYELA AND MOROGORO DISTRICTS, TANZANIA. Mirende has established a number of research collaborative networks both within Tanzania and abroad including networks in UK, Germany, Ghana, Zambia, US, and Uganda. Dr. Matiko has led numerous research projects focusing on diverse aspects of veterinary medicine, including: Seroprevalence and Interepidemic Rift Valley Fever virus seroconversion, Adaptation of vaccines for livestock diseases such as Rift Valley Fever, Anthelminthic resistance in small ruminants, Strategic Water Harvesting Technologies for Enhancing Resilience to Climate Change in Rural Communities in Semi-Arid Areas of Tanzania (SWAHAT), One Health National Networks for Enhanced Research in Infectious Diseases; Increasing Poultry productivity through Thermostable Vaccines for control of Respiratory Diseases and Enhancing Community of Practice in One health Through Postgraduate Training and Staff Exchange in Africa. His research contributions extend to the supervision of numerous students’ projects, covering a wide range of topics in Veterinary science. Mirende is also involved in teaching of undergraduate, postgraduate and provision of consultancy at the Sokoine University of Agriculture. Since 2005 to 2008 he worked as an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Theriogenology and then as Lecturer at the same department from 2008 to 2012. Mirende was promoted to Senior Lecturer at Sokoine University of Agriculture from 2012 to present.
