Prof. Modesta J. Makungu joined Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in 2002 as a Veterinary Clinician at the SUA Teaching Animal Hospital. She qualified as a Veterinarian from SUA in 2001. Prof. Makungu received her Master of Veterinary Medicine degree in Veterinary Surgery and Radiology from SUA in 2006 and a PhD degree in Veterinary Anatomy from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2015, for research into the “Aspects of the morphological, radiographic, and ultrasonographic anatomy of the red panda (Ailurus fulgens) and ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta)”. She began her career as a Tutorial Assistant in the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Theriogenology in 2003 and rising through the ranks to become Associate Professor in 2019. Her interests in Diagnostic Imaging enabled her to receive an International Veterinary Radiology Association (IVRA) Bernstein Travel Fellowship in 2006. In 2007, she received an IVRA Educational Scholarship to undergo a clinical training in Diagnostic Imaging at Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, South Africa. Prof. Makungu has over 21 years experience in teaching Veterinary Surgery and Diagnostic Imaging to non-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and has supervised several students in their research. She served as an External Examiner, Department of Clinical Studies, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi from 2018 to 2021. Prof. Makungu is a member of the Tanzania Veterinary Association (TVA), International Veterinary Radiology Association (IVRA) and Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).
